The Review
What an experience with "The Gale", it is a magnificent piece of music, you can trace clear, visible influences as: Draconian, Swallow the Sun, Insomnium, and Wintersun. So let's take a closer deep sight into the album.
Actually, the title of the first track "61° 43' N 17° 07 E" is influenced with one of Swallow the Sun's "Songs from the North" Disc 2 songs. But, Coldbound's version is more dynamic. YEAH! it starts with some atmospheric/ambient sounds, reflect the folk, isolated nature of snowy lands! but the final part of the track carries hyper, melodic sounds of guitars, and drums.
"The Invocation" is a real example of Coldbound's Insomnium influence, you can trace that in the vocals performance, in how rhythms are combined with each other, the winter-ish mood in the heart of melodies.
"Endurance Through Time" I liked the rhythmic lines, which move you to the lands of the north, of naked nature, white lands, and the conflicted white, gray, dark gray colors of clouds, especially in the middle during the slow-tempo parts.
Next is "The Eminent Light" IDK, I felt its opening closer to Eternal Tears of Sorrow, or Wintersun, but actually the usage of synths is highly influenced with Dimmu Borgir. It is the first track you can hear to clean vocals inside it, angelic female sound, soft, emotional, brings you intimacy. You can realize that the theme of the song is closer to passing person under the cloudy skies, in the heart of coldness, with falling cold drops of tears! you touch all that in the melodies, the vocals performance, in the repeated words of "memories", "sky", "shattered".
Upcoming is "The Gale" is the fastest, and heaviest track in the album, it is very dynamic, and strong.
Next is "My Solace" IDK, the intro brings one of Nargaroth songs intro to my mind, actually "My Solace" is my favorite, I liked this Postrock influenced riff, with the aching sounds of gears, and the employment of synths.
"Winter Unfold" IDK why I am still thinking of Nargaroth, but "Winter Unfold" intro is like "Winter" in "Jahrenzeiten" album. The melodies of this track is somehow Viking, folk influenced sounds, Its beats, movements is a beautiful, powerful for stage for performing piece. from 3:09 to 4:34 is Doom Metal - Tempo one.
"Shades of Myself", it is darkened one and painful, the solo drum parts is closer to Postrock drum beats style, it is closer to Swallow the Sun doom-ish, depressed style.
Finally, "Towards the Weeping Skies" - my favorite one- welcome to the real taste of depression, the sounds of gears are like memories wave, remembrance mood. The music is really impressive, it traps you inside its colors of sounds, shades! IDK, I felt it like Depressive Black Metal melodic tracks. I like it! It is closed with sounds of waters, symphonic synths like the intro as declaring "Your Journey is End"
What an album, and what an experience, it is really beautiful piece of music, imagine that you are listening to good produced album with such great influences, you can trace the bittersweet taste of sadness, isolation, the colors of cold, the magic of the north, the folky sound, the aching inner sound of yourself.
The Rate: 8.5/10
